About the project
The UK's Digital Health Industry has an estimated £1.9bn turnover. The UK government is investing in research and innovation for healthcare, promoting digital adoption, and more specifically digital tools to help people manage long-term health conditions in their own homes.
Applications are invited for a fully-funded PhD studentship to be part of the Digital Health and Biomedical Engineering research group at the School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS). The interdisciplinary team is focused on explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) for health. The PhD will build artificial intelligence (AI) systems for interpreting sensors data and scanning health-related text for clinicians, not developers.
The PhD student will work closely with Professor Christopher Freeman (Applied Control) and Dr Mark Weal (Director of the Web Science Institute). You will explore how to combine sensors data with the best evidence/practice from biomedical literature. The project could involve a range of technologies, from natural language processing (NLP) to explainable artificial intelligence (XAI), applied to many forms of data from sensors to biomedical literature. The research could lead to new techniques and methods for remotely monitoring the health of individuals. Future Worlds is an accelerator to help translate research into innovations and is available for students to move their research into business.
Successful candidates would have a strong background in computer science and preference would be given to those with good understanding of electronics, machine learning (including deep learning), and knowledge engineering (including knowledge graphs).
